"I like the idea of giving every baby born in America a $5,000 account that will grow over time, so that when that young person turns 18 if they have finished high school they will be able to access it..." Democratic Presidential hopeful, Senator Hillary Clinton. "While the children are getting good at filling in all those little bubbles, what exactly are they really learning? How much creativity are we losing? How much of our children's passion is being killed?" Senator Hillary Clinton, addressing the NEA on the "No Child Left Behind" Act (which she voted for...) Huh? Let me understand this correctly, Mom Lefto. You want to give every new baby born in this country 5 grand for whatever they want to use it for but you think money spent on their education is "killing their passion?" How about we give that 5 grand to the teachers who are teaching our kids? Or to build and/or repair the schools they attend? "What are they really learning?" you ask. Maybe they are learning to deal with a little thing like goals? Or a little thing like pressure to perform? Or, maybe just maybe, they are learning to deal with life as an adult. Which they certainly won't learn if we just hand over money to them. Socialism, by any other name is still government handouts for little or no work. Think that might stifle their "creativity?" I do. I know I'd like my boss to just mail me my check but, in the real world, that just doesn't happen. I have to show up, I have to work, and I have to perform. Every day. That is a test, Mom Lefto. Just like testing our kids in school. To measure improvement or to document decline in performance. But you, Mom Lefto, would like to hand over my hard earned tax dollars, to the tune of possibly 20 BILLION dollars a year since there are approximately 4 million babies born every year in the United States. Now, to be fair, Mz. Clinton didn't specify just where that 20 BILLION dollars a year would actually come from but, I think, we all know where Democrats like to get money for their favorite programs. T-A-X-E-S. Your money. My money. The "No Child Left Behind" Act, in comparison, has cost about 2 billion in 6 YEARS and, while the debate continues on how effective the Act has been, it still seems to be working, for a lot less money. The Department of Education points to National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) results, released in July 2005, showing improved student achievement in reading and math:
So, according to Mom Lefto, this ain't working. But let's just give 5 grand to each kid and let them use it for whatever they want when reaching 18 years old. Yeah, that'll work. After all, socialism has really worked all over the world. The old Soviet Union showed us that. Socialism, which means government ownership and operation of means of production, has appealed to high-minded, fine people, to people of idealistic views, because of the supposed objectives of socialism, especially because of the supposed objectives of equality and social justice. These are fine objectives, and it is a tribute to people of good will that those objectives should appeal to them. But you have to ask the question: Does the system—no matter what its proponents say—produce those results? Once you look at the results, it is crystal clear that the system does not. Where are social injustices greatest? Social injustices are clearly greatest where you have central control. The degree of social injustice, torture, and incarceration in a place like Russia is of a different order of magnitude than it is in those Western countries in which most of us have grown up and in which we have been accustomed to regarding freedom as our natural heritage. If Mom Lefto gets elected in 2008 we need to be afraid, very afraid. And, the more I hear from her, I am tasked to do everything I can to keep that election from happening. I am but one voice but I will scream as loud as I can until they drag me off to prison for sedition against Her Royal Majesty, President Hillary Rodham Clinton on January 20, 2009. Care to join me now...or then?
