I am not a Patriots fan. Never have been. Never will be. I'll always remember the first team Dallas beat in their first Texas Stadium game...the Pats. 44 to 14, I believe. But I'll give them credit. They did go undefeated in this regular season. 16 and 0. Did it by coming from behind several times, including against the Cowboys and Giants.

But something just doesn't feel right about all this. Not like it felt when the last team, the Miami Dolphins, went undefeated, 35 years ago, in the regular season. Of course, they went undefeated in the playoffs also. It's yet to be seen if this Patriot team can repeat that also. After all, 18 and 1 would be a failed season for the Pats, even they say that.

But something just doesn't seem right. It's not because Jennifer Aniston picked Tom Brady to market her "Smart Water" instead of me. It's not because the Patriots beat the Cowboys along the way to that 16 and 0 record. It's not because the NFL decided to televise the Pats last game with the Giants on three freaking channels, when a bunch of Cowboy and Packer fans had to miss the REAL biggest game of the year. It's not even because Tom Brady's social life makes Joe Willie Namath (Google it if you're under 40) look like a monk.

It's the asterisk. You know, this thing *. There ought to be one on the 16 and 0. Like this, 16-0.* Why, you might rightfully ask, do you say that, cobbie? This team has beaten the odds, you might shout. This team has raised itself to a new level, you might yell.

Yep, that's all true. To a point. But where's the Pats integrity? Where's their balance? For example, let's look at a tale of two quarterbacks, both having great seasons. Tom Brady and Tony Romo. Both are hot items in Hollywood but do you think Tony would run off and leave Jessica if she got pregnant? Ask Bridget Moynahan that question about Tom. Yeah, I know they were "officially" broken up but...there's that little asterisk.

How about Tom Brady's steroid use? Yeah, I know it was just a joke by 2 disc jockey's but it really set the NFL world on fire for a few days during this "perfect" season. And, no matter whether it was true or not, it just added another doubt about the New England quarterback and his integrity...there's that little asterisk.

How about the whole "Spygate" thing? Coach Bill is fined $500,000 (that's a HALF MILLION dollars, for those of you in Rio Linda) which is more than any coach has ever been fined. EVER. And the Pats have forfeited their 1st round draft choice in 2008 AND the team was fined $250,000. Because they cheated and got caught. Yes, the great Patriots, winners of 3 Super Bowls, are cheaters, along with their head coach who okayed the entire mess....there's that little asterisk.

Now, I'll go ahead and give them their due. Tom Brady is a great QB. Coach Bill is a great coach. The Patriots are one of the greatest teams in NFL history. But 16 and 0 ain't 19 and 0 and isn't a Super Bowl win. If the Pats lose in the playoffs?...now there's a real asterisk.

Update: The asterisk has spoken. 18 and 1. The Wildcard New York Giants beat the "greatest team ever" Patsy's in the Super Bowl. How 'bout them Giants! And it appears that the "greatest coach ever" has been illegally taping practices since 2000. More about this in another blog...
